God’s World In Black And White – Day 4

Ewes B&W WM

This is what it looks like most mornings when I feed my wooly friends.

I will bring them their minerals, water, an occasional bucketful of oats, and now that winter has caused the grass to be less abundant at the moment, they look forward to their bundle of hay as well, and all gather to eat it as if there was no tomorrow.

Every day as I approach the field where they are grazing, they come and greet me with warm bleeting sounds and follow me everywhere; they know who I am, why I am here, and they are happy (when we are not chasing them to clip their hooves and such that is).

Recently, my father preached on one of my favorite childhood memory verses which I still remember like it was yesterday:

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.  He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”

~Psalm 23~

Ah, how much more do I understand this beautiful passage now caring for sheep on our family’s farm!  It gives me such a fuller realization at just how reliant we are on God’s love, sacrifice, and care for us, just like sheep in need of a shepherd to care, lead, and protect them from harm.

“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep……I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.  As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.”

~John 10:11, 14-15~

I am continually amazed at how God’s Word, applies so beautifully with our ventures in farming and taking dominion of the land He has blessed us with, and look forward to seeing how the Lord uses our family this year on our small piece of country heaven in 2015.

“Saviour, like a Shepherd lead us,
Much we need thy tend’rest care;
In thy pleasant pastures feed us,
For our use thy folds prepare:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, thine we are.

We are thine; do thou befriend us,
Be the Guardian of our way;
Keep thy flock, from sin defend us,
Seek us when we go astray:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Hear the children when they pray.

Thou hast promised to receive us,
Poor and sinful though we be;
Thou hast mercy to relieve us,
Grace to cleanse, and pow’r to free:
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Let us early turn to thee.

Early let us seek thy favor;
Early let us do thy will;
Blessed Lord and only Saviour,
With thy love our bosoms fill
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
Thou hast loved us, love us still.”
